ParticipantI thought I’d head this old chestnut off at the pass. In an ideal world (the one that survey respondents live in) everyone would have monthly paper copies. In the real world this is terrible idea on the following grounds: i) environmental (paper etc.) over to Jodie … ii) printing manpower. Angela used to spend 2 days printing 1200 copies, Hilary won’t do this (and I can’t see anyone else volunteering) iii) Distribution manpower. The pre-Xmas leaflet drop showed that we now don’t have the congregational mobility to deliver across the benefice iv) cost. The xerox machine costs ca. £2k p.a. Priniting parish news dictated a high capacity (and high maintenance) machine. When the current contract runs out in Septemeber we can buy a much cheaper machine provided we don’t go back to paper. Don’t even think about it!

ParticipantMe again. There will be pushback against electronic but I’m very keen to go this way. Could we keep a hybrid story for the very short term, but plan to go 100% electronic on Sept 1 2025? Everyone will have had sufficient notice to subscribe, access it via UBWBY website (or other route) by then. Jodie

ParticipantPlease do not consider a move to fully electronic. There are still parishioners who have no access to the internet , for some it is their only link to church as they can no longer attend services .

ParticipantThere is a small minority who do not have the means to read an electronic copy. In some ways, as they are mostly very elderly, these are the ones who most need the Parish News and therefore there needs to be some paper copies. They are the ones who have been faithful churchgoers for years and years, and it can be their only link to the Church they once attended. It keeps them in touch with what is going on, and also the people who they know. They can also support activities if they know of them in their prayer life.

ParticipantReading the chat above, I certainly would not want to exclude anyone from participating in church life through prayer, giving or other means. Perhaps there IS a sensible way of continuing a 90/10 pattern (in favour of electronic) without need for an expensive machine. Our St O’s printer contract runs out in Sept 2025. Is there an inexpensive way of producing the 10% (or less) paper copies? Could we ‘design-out waste’ by neat formatting? Also, how many actual paper copies are being produced across the 3 churches, please? Do we need them all?

ParticipantI agree that only a small minority needs to be printed and that electronic copies accessible via the website and e mail circulation list are absolutely fine for most people. There are always a good number of spare printed copies in St Mary’s so I suggest Antonia audits the number actually needed physically and we reduce the print run to that number.Joyce St Mary’s
